Gülşen Pazarbaşı (b. 1988) is a contemporary artist working with abstraction as a material and spatial practice, constructing surfaces that operate between image, object, and memory.

Her work is shaped by the layered cultural landscape of Antakya (Antioch)—a city marked by migration, belief systems, and architectural palimpsests. Drawing from its archaeological and material history, particularly its mosaic traditions, she approaches painting as a site of accumulation and transformation, where surfaces hold, obscure, and reconfigure traces over time.

Working primarily with acrylic on canvas, Pazarbaşı builds dense, sculptural compositions through processes of layering, compression, and excavation. Gesture is embedded within the material—partially erased, displaced, and reconfigured over time. These surfaces resist immediacy, unfolding instead through duration and proximity.

Often working at large scale, her paintings extend beyond the pictorial field, engaging the wall as an active component and reinforcing their physical and spatial presence.

With a background in law, her practice is informed by an ongoing negotiation between structure and indeterminacy. Each work develops through a state of controlled instability, where systems are constructed only to be tested, disrupted, and reformed.

Pazarbaşı approaches abstraction not as reduction, but as a form of intensification. Through density, depth, and fragmentation, the works evoke unstable memory, shifting perception, and the limits of legibility. Meaning remains contingent—emerging through encounter rather than resolution.

Her recent body of work, including the Bloom series, draws from lived moments—often inspired by her travels—where color, light, and atmosphere leave a lasting sensory imprint, translated into material and surface.

While grounded in material inquiry, painting also operates as a space of release, where control yields to intuition and form emerges through process.
